Jerry Evans Bunting

Jerry Evans Bunting, 94, passed away peacefully at home on April 18, 2024, surrounded by his family. Jerry was born on October 30, 1929, to Viola and Sellie Bunting and raised in Poquoson.

Jerry graduated from Poquoson High School in 1946 where he played football for the Bull Islanders.

He proudly served in the United States Marine Corps for 25 years retiring in 1976 at the rank of Captain, completing one tour in Vietnam. After completing his military service, Jerry worked in the Petro Chemical profession as an oil surveyor. During his military service, he moved out of Poquoson and professional careers living in North Carolina and Louisiana. He returned to his hometown of Poquoson in 2021.

If Jerry was ever asked to play golf, he would respond by saying, “only on days that end in ‘y’.” This was a true statement as he did play every day during his prime. He was also an avid reader and loved woodworking – especially making wooden bowls and lamps.

Jerry is reunited with his parents; his wife, Melvin Graham Bunting; daughter, Debbie Backus; grandchild, Christopher Backus; brothers, Joseph Bunting and Jack Bunting; sister-in-law; Phyllis Bunting.

His memory is cherished by his children, Denise Curtis and husband Bobby; grandchildren, Jerry Backus, Jerry Cornwall, Amy Schwartz; great-grandchildren, Amy’s children, Mason and Marlon; sister-in-law, Jane Bunting, and a host of nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at Claytor Rollins Funeral Home on Wednesday, April 24, 2024, at 6:00PM, presided by Chaplain Vicki Reason. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of your choice. The family would like to thank Heartland Hospice, especially Traci Ladonne, Nicole, Kayla, and Vicki. The family will continue to receive friends immediately following the service at 11 Hunts Neck Road, Poquoson.
